The Story

It All Started with a Loco idea.

The name Loco Boys is a play-on-words for the phrase “Local Boy”. Mike Mohrhardt wanted a name that would fittingly tie together every aspect of the business: its mission to support “all things local”, its spirit and fun personality with an edginess to it, his local roots, and a clever name to pay homage to his Mexican heritage.

My grandmother was a strong Mexican woman, and is the major inspiration behind the vision and business.
— Mike Mohrhardt (owner)

Loco Boys Brewing Company aims to be just a little more “loco” than the next guy. There are no rules in craft beer, and if there were, Loco Boys wouldn’t follow them.

Loco TEAM

Mike Mohrhardt (owner)

Born and raised in Traverse City, Mike earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Marketing from Michigan State University and moved to Mexico shortly after. Fluent in Spanish, Mike has had a love for his Mexican heritage since he was young and has continued to immerse himself in the culture throughout his life. In 2000, he moved to the west coast where he spent 17 years working in the entertainment industry. While living in L.A., he developed a love for craft beer and felt the urge to follow his entrepreneurial roots. In 2017, he and his now wife decided to move back to his hometown and begin the journey of what is now Loco Boys Brewing Company.

When Mike’s not at the brewery, you can typically find him spending time with his wife, son (1), and dog, or in flip flops & board shorts, either trying to squeeze in some beach volleyball or playing his guitar.

Andy Largent (co-owner / brewer)

Traverse City native, Andy Largent, has been brewing beer on a commercial scale for more than a decade, earning a number of regional and local awards. He has been instrumental in helping multiple breweries in northern Michigan in their early stages, whether it’s growing their production brewing, designing, building, and/or installing new and existing equipment, Andy has done it. He is an essential part of the loco team.

Outside of brewing, Andy enjoys spending most of his time outdoors on a good mountain biking trail or skiing.

Bryon Figueroa (Chef Fig)

Bryon was born and raised in Warren, Michigan. Chef Fig began his cooking career at 14 years old at a vintage drive-in A&W. Bryon moved to Northern Michigan in 2001, where he met his wife of 17 years, Jaime. Bryon spent time as a sous and executive chef in restaurants around the Leelanau area. Together with a growing family, Fig and his wife opened Fig’s Breakfast and Lunch in Lake Leelanau. At Fig’s, Bryon fueled his passion for fresh, local, and healthy food with an emphasis on cooking from scratch. As the years as a Chef and owner went by, Bryon cultivated many relationships with local farms and other like-minded people. Bryon’s philosophy, experience, and relationships have given him the freedom to cook with passion and enthusiasm. His passion and knowledge of seasonal eating are the backbone of our Loco kitchen.

When not wielding a spatula, Chef Fig can be found playing yard, board, and strategy games with his enthusiastic family. Bryon has 3 daughters and 1 son, some of whom work here and share in his passion.

Brewed by locos, for locos!
